The Colonial Tavern

The Rutledge Tavern

Colonial Taverns usually go through a series of names as owners change hands. During it existence it was known as the “Sword and Trumpet Tavern” and the “Saint Gabriel Tavern”. Today the tavern is named after one of the last known proprietors, Edgar Rutledge.

On First Fridays between 6PM and 9PM the Rutledge Tavern is open for guided tours. Our guides will treat you with Colonial hospitality as they take you through the Dining Hall, Sitting Room, Game Room, and Kitchen. You can then go upstairs and visit some of the rooms where guests spent the night. There are rumors that the ghost of Rutledge still roams the tavern. Even if it is true, we were told that he was an accommodating host; we can only assume that this ghost is gracious as well.

Admission is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

The Rutledge Tavern is also available for rental for special occasions.  Please contact the Middleford Historical Society for more information.
